Data Migration to Microsoft Dynamics

Industry: Automotive
Country: Poland
Scope of work: Data mapping, Data processing
Technology stack: .Net

The automotive manufacturer introduced a new ERP system on the Microsoft Dynamics platform, and they were required to move all dealers across Europe to the new platform. We helped our client to process full data migration from the legacy ERP system to the new environment.

This company introduced a new central ERP system based on the Microsoft Dynamics platform and was required to move all dealership networks from legacy systems to the new environment. A legacy dealer’s ERP system had a different business object definition and data structure compared to Microsoft Dynamics.

Many previous attempts were not successful, and so we were asked not only to migrate the data but to process it as well and move the data without loss of information.

To start with the migration, at the beginning, we had to define the differences between the legacy and new platforms. We mapped the structure of the current ERP system to the new required architecture of the Microsoft Dynamics web service, which is used to import data by Italy’s IT department.

After the data mapping was done, we started to check the data partially. During the project, we found lots of similar or legacy records that shouldn’t be migrated, so the data processing stage has been started. We have developed a custom application where, based on rules, we were able to get all duplicated or legacy records.

In iterations, we have processed more than 1M records with their relations to other business objects, every time checking if all the data are properly prepared and possible to import.

Business Impact

By the final results, we generated CSV files available to import by the IT department in the company’s HQ. All files were successfully imported to the Microsoft Dynamics platform, and the migration was done. The dealer was able to move operations to the new ERP system without loss of important information.

The full data migration process included:

1.000.000 – records properly migrated

14.000 – duplicated records processed

4 – processing iterations

Migrate with confidence!
